Help on searching the National Earthquake Database

  • The earliest earthquake on record occurred in 1568.
  • Years must be entered as 4-digit numbers (eg., 2003, not 03).
  • If both date fields are left blank, they default to 14 days from today.
  • If either date field is left blank, it defaults to 14 days from the date specified in the other date field.
  • If the hour and minute fields are left blank, they default to 00:00, i.e., midnight.
  • The latitude, longitude and magnitude fields will assume the default values unless changed.
  • The longitude is negative for Canada.

The following is an example of a common database search request.
Request for all earthquakes in southern British Columbia between June and July of 1994 with a magnitude greater that 4.
