Strong Motion instruments in Southwestern B.C.
The Geological Survey of Canada operates a network of strong seismometers in south-western British Columbia. Instruments in this network are also contributed by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, BC, and Miller Capilano Highway Maintenance Corporation.
The strong motion seismometers measure ground shaking and report measurements over the Internet in real time. The data from these instruments are also used to update and improve building codes and seismic hazard maps.
Many instruments are installed in schools; some are hosted by churches, businesses and private individuals. The Geological Survey of Canada is very grateful for this support..
On the map above we plot these strong motion sensors which are also available in the table below.
